What should I pick? 1) I see a lot of different types of files available for download. Which should I pick? We offer several types of files for your convenience. If you use Windows Media Player, pick WMV. For Quicktime users, choose MOV. For ipod users and other portable player systems, choose M4v, or for some portable systems, MP4. For the best picture clarity, choose XVID, but be aware that you will have to either get a plugin for your player or get a player that is designed for Xvid. For more help on this subject, watch the video below. 2)
I
see RSS feeds on
your site. What are those for? RSS feeds are an
informational script or summary that allow certain programs called
aggregators to automatically check for new updates in site content.
They essentially allow a subscription to our website. For a more
detailed explaination, watch the video below the next question.
4) What is a RSS feed aggregator? Which one should I use? An RSS aggregator is a program that can read the content of an RSS feed. These programs automatically check the websites they are subscribed to and look for updates in the feed. When there are updates, the aggregator will either alert you of thie new content or download it automatically depending on what program you are using. There are many types of programs out there, some are simple plug-ins, or sub-programs in your web-browser. Some are seperate programs, and some even play the content they download. The best option for you depends on what sort of content you are looking for. For more information, see the video below (coming soon). 5) What media player should I use for vewing or listening to your content? There are many media players out there. Some come standard with your computer. Some cost extra, some are free for download. The best player for you will vary. For more information, see the video below. 6) Where can I find other podcasts? There are lots of listing sites for internet shows. Some aggregators also have content searches, such as itunes and fireant. Some sites, such as a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzz2bDdiKcU">youtube and googlevideo, actually host content from all sorts of people. For more information and a good list of content listing sites, see the video below (coming soon). 7) What are Torrents? How do I use them? A torrent file is a special file configuration that allows you to download parts of the same file from many places at once. This allows for very fast downloads, as long as the content you are downloading is being uploaded by a wide variety of people. Torrent programs act as file sharing programs, but, instead of you finding one person to download from, you download from everyone who has it available at once. Many podcasters and other content providers, even software sellers, make their content available by torrent, not only to give you faster downloads, but to reduce the workload on their servers. For more information, see the video below (coming soon). 8) Should I download shows or just hit play? Whats the best way to get more content? Most podcasted shows are set up to be downloaded. Our content is all free and available to be downloaded and watched as often as you wish. Some content, however, such as the content embedded on this page, is designed to be streamed, or played from the web page itself, rather than downloaded and saved. The content that we have available for download can also be played directly from our server, but that is not ideal. If, however, you wish to avoid taking up space on your hard drive, that is certainly an option. You may find that many content providers have poor playback when played from the site directly, especially with larger files. Most of the content that is designed to be streamed, or run from the website, is lower picture quality due to file size contraints involved in streaming content smoothly. If you want a higher quality video, you will likely want to choose content designed for download. For more information, see the video below (coming soon). 9) How can I embed content in a blog or my website that I like? Embedding content, be it video or pictures, requires a blog that accepts html tags. Some blogs vary on tag support, and many even have automatic tag creators to make embedding easier. In most cases, embedding content on a blog is the same as embedding it in a website. Some sites, like youtube, offer the necessary html for embedding right next to the video. For a more detailed explaination and instructions, see the video below (coming soon). 10) Are there portable video players I can use? What should I pick? Yes, there are many portable items that can play our content or other online video. In fact, small media players like the Sony PSP or the Ipod Video are great ways to view interne content, because the video is often too compressed to look great on a large screen, but it looks perfect on the smaller screens. For more information on portable players and a greater list of options, see the video below. |
